Understanding Work Through an Age-Inclusive Lens

The world of work is changing faster than at any point in modern history. Longer working lives, hybrid work models, shifting expectations of wellbeing and purpose, rapid digital transformation and evolving labour market pressures are reshaping how people of every age participate in work.

At The Age Diversity Forum, our mission is to ensure these changes lead to more inclusive, equitable and sustainable workplaces. We conduct research that examines:

  • how different age groups experience work,

  • the structural factors that shape participation,

  • the assumptions and stereotypes that influence employment outcomes,

  • and the organisational and policy systems that support (or hinder) age inclusion.

Our work is built on a simple but powerful principle: Age inclusion is not a niche issue, it is a fundamental part of workforce resilience, productivity and well-being.

To advance that vision, we produce white papers, research reports and strategic insights that:

  • challenge misconceptions,

  • examine lived experience across generations,

  • explore the impact of organisational practice,

  • and provide evidence-led recommendations for employers, policymakers and practitioners.

These publications sit at the intersection of workforce research, organisational development, Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), wellbeing and the future of work, always viewed through the lens of age inclusion.

Why This Research Matters

Today’s workforce spans five generations, each with different pressures, expectations and opportunities. Understanding these dynamics is essential for:

  • designing fair and flexible working models,

  • attracting and retaining talent,

  • supporting longer working lives,

  • navigating hybrid and digital transformation,

  • and ensuring that work remains healthy, productive and meaningful across all life stages.

Age diversity is not simply a demographic reality, it is a strategic asset. Our research demonstrates how organisations can unlock this asset through informed, evidence-based action.

What You’ll Find on This Page

This Research page brings together all of our major publications in one place. Each summary links to an insight paper that explores a key aspect of age inclusion, legal risk, workforce experience or hybrid work.

If you are a senior leader, HR professional, policymaker, researcher or practitioner, these papers provide a structured foundation for understanding the modern age-diverse workforce, and for shaping the systems that support it.

Hybrid Working – Flagship White Paper Series

Hybrid Working: the New Norm?

An original scope reflecting on the hybrid phenomenon that grew from the COVID pandemic,  after hearing conflicting stories and anecdotes on which generation best suited a hybrid style working.  Hybrid working emerged in 2021 as one of the most significant shifts in modern working life. Initially driven by the necessity of pandemic restrictions, it has since evolved into a long-term structural change shaping organisational culture, employee expectations and labour market dynamics. Fuelled by recognising perception and stereotyping, The Age Diversity Forum set about originating first of its kind research. At its core, the research challenges widespread generational narratives that suggested hybrid working suited one generation over another.

White Paper Trilogy

What followed is a special Trilogy of White Papers, more easily accessible and digestible for organisations to evaluate  and recognise recommended design for hybrid working.

Read the Hybrid Trilogy here:

1) Hybrid Working: The 2021 Evidence Base

A baseline study capturing early hybrid working experiences, challenges and misconceptions.

[Read The White Paper Trilogy 1]

2) Hybrid Working: Evolution 2021–2025

A longitudinal review mapping how hybrid work matured and what organisations learned along the way.

[Read The White Paper Trilogy 2]

3) Hybrid Working: Age Diversity, Equity & the Future of Work

A strategic outlook for 2026 and beyond, focused on designing hybrid models that work for every generation.

The Trilogy was developed from the original core long form research, and you can read the whole report here:

And in 2025, The Age Diversity Forum completed a whole review and update of that initial research. As we see organisations tackle new working environments and the Hybrid term is used as an umbrella term to other type of flexible and remote working, it was time to bring the research up to date.
